In the wake of the 2024 election, the American Muslim 2024 Election Taskforce calls on the Democratic Party and the Biden administration to recognize the consequences of abandoning critical issues central to their diverse base. The Democratic Party’s failure to address the crisis in Palestine and respond to the urgent human rights concerns of the American Muslim community and its allies has had profound electoral consequences. Moving forward, the Democratic Party must rectify these failures, demonstrate integrity, and act in the interest of justice.
This election has brought into sharp focus the divide between the demands of key segments within the Democratic base—such as the Arab and Muslim communities and younger Americans—and the priorities of the Democratic establishment, particularly on foreign policy. While candidates outside the two major parties voiced strong support for human rights and an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the Democratic Party overlooked the needs of communities calling for a more just foreign policy—especially by addressing the ongoing genocide against Palestinians, ending U.S. military support for Israel, and adopting a truly inclusive approach that recognizes the dignity and rights of all.
American Muslims, who have consistently shown up for the Democratic Party in past elections, were left feeling disillusioned and deeply disappointed. In 2020, 86% of Muslims voted for Biden, while just 6% voted for Donald Trump. This year, however, the Council on American-Islamic Relations’ exit survey revealed that Kamala Harris garnered only 20.3% of the Muslim vote. By neglecting core concerns such as the crisis in Gaza, the Democratic Party alienated a crucial part of its coalition.
The American Muslim 2024 Election Taskforce calls on the Biden administration to reflect on this moment. There remains a critical opportunity for the Democratic Party to rebuild trust. This requires a genuine response to the calls for justice in Palestine—not through token statements but through concrete action to end U.S. support for the Israeli government’s devastating siege on Gaza. The Democrats and the administration can and must take immediate steps to demand accountability, call for an end to violence, and recognize the Palestinian people’s right to peace and dignity.
This election has only strengthened the resolve of American Muslims—and all who stand for justice—to demand accountability. We remain steadfast in our commitment to speak out against policies that harm both Americans and people abroad, and we are prepared to work with allies to uphold policies rooted in human rights.
Together, we call on the Biden administration to act decisively to end the suffering in Gaza and to honor its commitments to human rights. Now is the time to rebuild a future based on peace, justice, and dignity. Let us remain united, resilient, and unwavering in our pursuit of justice.
